FDA Approves Medical Image Viewing Software For Apple iPhone, iPad - Proactiveinvestors (NA)

The US FDA announced today that it has approved Mobile MIM, a software that lets doctors view medical images on Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone and iPad.

"This important mobile technology provides physicians with the ability to immediately view images and make diagnoses without having to be back at the workstation or wait for film," said the chief scientist of FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, William Maisel.

Radiology images are first compressed for secure network transfer and then sent to iPhone or iPad using Mobile MIM.

Because the display performance of mobile devices can vary under different lighting, Mobile MIM comes with a contrast test in which a small part of the screen is a slightly different shade than the rest of the screen.

Being able to identify and tap that portion of the screen would indicate the doctor's ability to identify to make a diagnosis, which requires identifying contrast differences, is not affected by lighting conditions.

Mobile MIM, made by Cleveland-based MIM Software, allows doctors to work with images from medical imaging technology like computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography.

In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010, Apple sold 4.19 million units of iPad and 14.1 million Iphones.
